Dynamic spectral imaging colposcopy: higher sensitivity for detection of premalignant cervical lesions.

Purpose:

To validate the ability of a colposcope employing Dynamic Spectral Imaging Technology to identify and discriminate between High-Grade and Low-Grade lesions of the cervix as distinct from normal tissue.

Method:

A three-centre, prospective clinical trial conducted in hospitals in the Netherlands. The DYSIS colposcope was used to compare traditional colposcopic impression with DYSIS colposcopy (using the DYSISmap and standard indicators) to identify biopsy sites. Biopsies were gathered from all indicated sites and sent for histological analysis.

Results:

275 women were recruited. When DYSIS colposcopy was practised (using the DYSISmap combined with traditional colposcopic impression) the sensitivity to detecting High grade cervical lesions (CIN2+) was 88% in comparison to 55% with 95% confidence intervals.

Conclusion:

The sensitivity of DYSIS colposcopy is significantly higher that traditional colposcopy in the detection of cervical lesions that may require treatment.
